Essential Maternity Basics You’ll Love

It’s true – I’m a creature of habit with the clothing items I love! Especially when I am pregnant, and even more so when I have found the perfect level of comfort! After two pregnancies, I can confirm that these items are my very favorite go-to’s. Most of the items are shown in black but most do come in other colors as well – I just tend to wear a lot of black when pregnant! Black tends to be a bit more slimming while lighter colors and patterns add to the cause. 🙂 All items are linked below, trust me, these are the very best – I wouldn’t steer you wrong!

I recently got the opportunity to work with and try several styling tools and styling products from from Eva NYC. They are just entering the midwest (specifically in Meijer) and I am happy to help them spread the good news. The ladies from the Eva team that I chatted with were so sweet and I love what the company stands for.

The premium Ingredients found in their products that are meant to encourage stronger, healthier hair:

My personal favorite characteristic of the styling products is the GLORIOUS SMELL and the soft finish that they leave behind – so so good!
Eva NYC Mane Magic 10-in-1 Primer
I spray on my damp hair as a primer and heat protectant before blow drying! Has a super light misting bottle and leaves a silky finish after using the hot tools.

This wand is LEGIT. And so powerful! My favorite feature is that you can adjust the heat – I had never used a wand where you could adjust the temp! These waves lasted me 5-7 days with no wash – seriously!

healthy heat pro-power dryer

This dryer has replaced my old hair dryer for good. It left my hair feeling smoother and shinier, and I love the attachment on the end which helps to cut dry time in half.

HI BABES – HOW WAS THE WEEKEND?! It’s been a MINUTE since I posted – will share where I have been (& why) later this week<3
You all should know by now that I am a huge PINK BLUSH fan – this is my 3rd time working with them and I could not be more excited!

I received this beautiful peachy/coral off the shoulder shirt earlier this month and fell in love immediately – I love the unique details on the straps and off the shoulder draping. It is an amazing color, flattering, perfect for Spring, and comfortable – what more could a girl want?
Pink Blush is NOT just maternity wear – they carry a full women’s, accessory & shoe line – and every item is adorable! Many of the items in the shop will take you from pre-pregnancy, through pregnancy and post-pregnancy as they are flattering and made for all stages of a women’s life.
I want to gift this shirt or any item you choose this week to one follower – so I teamed up with Pink Blush to give away a $50 gift card! I just announced the giveaway and entry rules on my instagram so head on over to enter! Winner will be choosen on Friday, May 12th.
I hope you have an amazing week – kick some ass & take some names!

PS — Can we please talk about my new Cincinnati photographer Hyun Ah Perez Photography? I posted back in March that I was looking for an awesome new photographer to work with after our move back to OH and in the midst of LIFE I started to fall behind on my posts because I was running low on time to find someone great that would just “get” what I was looking for. Through the fate of the universe Hyan (Hannah) found ME on Facebook and here we are! I highly recommend her services – you will be seeing a lot more of her work in the future on Running with Strollers 🙂

V-Day Chill Mode + February Favorite Gift Picks!

Hi Guys! We’re well into the month of love and I’m pretty sure we’ll be celebrating this on the blog until March. A lot of people say February isn’t a great month for them but I love it because it is a month for a few special birthdays, including mine and Calvin’s! Also, it’s my first V-Day with two Baes and that’s a pretty cool thing. We don’t typically do anything too special and this year won’t be much different…especially since Calvin is tucked in by 7:30pm each night and we won’t have a babysitter.
ENTER: CHILL MODE
Chill Mode is my favorite mode since becoming a Mom and Feb 14th will be no different. I’m not going to lie, besides seeing Calvin’s sweet face after work, my 2nd favorite part of the day is when he’s finally asleep and I get a moment to just take a deep breath and TAKE. A. BREAK.
Chill Mode often translate to my style as well…I love this comfy, V-Day inspired look. I’m not typically a “pink” girl but this cable knit sweater is the comfiest (#1 priority) – and it’s so festive for Feb!
img_2209
Sweater
Charcoal Leggings
Chill Mode on V-day for us will probably be dinner at home (maybe we’ll even get crazy and get some Chipotle), a glass of wine (haven’t really been drinking much more than that lately), and probably a netflix movie (we watched finding Dory this week, without Calvin, because we’re really cool.) It’s the little things, you guys. Do you have any other ideas? What are parents supposed to do on Vday? How else do we chill?

img_2211
I feel like most people don’t do much more than a card, chocolate, and/or flowers for Vday so you should probably ask for one of these blush picks (or just get it for yourself, duh!) I own all of these items and they are my current February Favorites! img_2243
1 – Burts Lip Gloss
Love how all Burt’s products are 100% natural!
2 – Hearts Mug
Less than $10 and THE CUTEST!
3 – Blush Sneakers
On sale for $20! More colors available. Same pair I am wearing in the photos.
4 – Kindred Goods
This is Old Navy’s new beauty line – Orange Blossom scent is amazing! Pick up in the checkout line in your local store.
5 – Rose Gold/Blush Aviators (similar)
The ones I am wearing in the photo are actually from Forever 21, but I cannot find online. Check out these or find in store @forever.
 Splurge! – Rose Gold iwatch
I got an iwatch for my birthday and it is helping me so much to stay on track with my workouts! I have gold but love this ROSE gold for the holiday!

The Best Winter Bargain Beauty Buys (under $10!)

Hi Hi! How is everyone doing?! What a crazy start to the year it is been (I feel like I’m always saying this) – filled with chasing our WALKING baby, lots of work, a few sickies, traveling for my job, and it goes on! We are almost out of my least fave month (bye, Jan!) & into mine AND Calvin’s bday month…I can’t believe it! I’m expecting an amazing February full of changes, birthday celebrations, successes and more blog posts than I was able to produce creatively this month.
With all the craziness, I have, however, had the time to try some new products! If you’re like me, you find things you love and buy them over and over – but every once and a while it’s just time to mix it up. The winter can be so rough on your skin, hair, and look over all, so it’s important to take extra care. Here are the affordable drugstore beauty faves that I’ve been trying (and loving) for the past 4-6 weeks:
Simple ‘Kind to Skin’ Facial Cleanser
Simple Kind to Skin Facial Cleanser, Foaming 5 oz
I had never bought the Simple brand before but I was looking for a new cleanser and this one caught my eye. I love a good foaming cleanser and there are no artificial perfumes, dyes, or harsh chemicals. It does a good job removing even my eye makeup and my skin just feels super CLEAN after I rinse. The cleanser doesn’t leave behind a bunch of residue or excess product that I’m wiping away with a towel, it truly feels like I’m washing everything off and am left with a squeaky clean fresh face.
Neutrogena Alcohol Free Toner
Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner, 8.5 OzEven though I feel the Simple cleanser does a great job and I don’t wear a TON of face makeup every day, I like to use a toner to get off anything that may be left behind. Most toner’s are very harsh and contain astringents/alcohols as the main ingredient and tend to strip out all moisture, which actually causes more breakouts in the long run. This alcohol-free toner is light, fresh, and doesn’t dry out my skin. Just apply a small amount to a cotton ball or cotton pad and gently scrub face to feel like an angel before bed
Coconut Oil

Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil by Sky Organics 16.9 oz- USDA Organic Coconut Oil, Cold-Pressed, Kosher, Cruelty-Free, Fairtrade, Unrefined- Ideal as a Skin Moisturizer, Hair Treatment & Baking

I know, I know I am LATE to the coconut oil game. I have been using it religiously as a face moisturizer twice a day -once in the morning and then once at night right before bed. In the morning, I will put it on after I wash my face and then put my foundation on right away, which is a total game changer. My makeup goes on so so much better, is so much more even, and leaves almost a dewy (not oily) look behind. I would seriously take a bath in coconut oil if I could. Or maybe a shower of coconut oil to be more efficient. When traveling for work this month, I obviously couldn’t take my whole jar with me so I didn’t take it at all and I had withdrawals (and a peely face.) Plus, it’s 100% organic!
NYX Tinted Brow Mascara
Brow Mascara: so necessary!!! If you fill in your brow with a pencil (like I do) it’s easy to leave behind lines in the brow that can look uneven. A mascara helps to fill everything in and even out the brow. So, this is step #2 in my brow game. For reference, I use the BRUNETTE shade and it is plenty dark to match my hair. Just brush into brows from inner to outer and then slightly brush brows UP – I feel like this lifts my eyes and makes everything seem more awake. Weird?
Rimmel Scandaleyes Mascara

Rimmel Scandaleyes Curved Brush Mascara, Black, 0.41 Fluid Ounce

Out of any make-up product, I am probably most picky about my mascara. I have to have a curved brush because it helps to perfectly curl the lashes without the step of an eyelash curler (no one has time for that.) I LOVE this mascara – it is not clumpy, but enough comes out to not need a million layers and it stays all day, but it’s not hard to wash off. Oh, and it’s under $5 on amazon! So much cheaper than my normal Lorac $22 go-to!
Garnier Brazilian Smooth Flatiron Express
Garnier Hair Care Fructis Brazilian Smooth Flatirion Express, Difficult to Straighten Hair, 5.1 Fluid OunceThis Garnier heat protectant smells like heaven! It says “flat iron express” but you don’t have to be straightening your hair to use it. I use less than a dime sized amount on my ends and around my face where I have post-baby breakage to protect from the heat of the blow dryer and any other tools I use on my hair that day. In addition to using a protectant, I try to only style my hair with heat 2 times a week, max! This is really the best way to protect damaged hair. If you have to style multiple times a week, try this, I think you will love it! PS – if I’m being honest, I’ve been using this one a lot longer than 4-6 weeks and one bottle has lasted me several months!

It’s always nice to have salon grade beauty products (and I do invest in more expensive shampoos/conditioners because of my color treated hair) but having affordable go-to drugstore options is so much more realistic for most of us. We have a wedding to pay for this year and I know all our babies take our $$$ by the second, lol! Quite literally, Calvin loves pulling things out of my purse. ANYWAYS – What are your go-tos? What do I need to try next? Would love your suggestions and recos!
Let me know if you try any of these – love ya all!kaylasignature-06
PS – I had a cute helper while trying to get a product shot:

My 10 Minute (Easy!) Everyday Makeup Routine

Hey babes!
I’m so excited to share my first video with you all! I’ve been wanting to do this one for some time so I finally got my set-up ready and recorded my everyday makeup tutorial! No judging on the quality – I didn’t edit at all or add any special features. This is truly just me walking you through what I do every day before work. I need quick. I need easy. I need something to make me look presentable – and this is it. Simple enough for all my busy mama readers to replicate!
While the video is 13 min, I believe without the talking it is truly a 10 minute (or less) routine.
I have linked all of the products I used in the tutorial below – just click on the image for info!

LORAC PRO Powder Cheek Stain

Next time I will record in landscape so that I don’t have the black borders. Sometimes I get so excited to do something that I have to do it right away and I don’t research up front…hence why I recorded in portrait like a big #rookie.
Please let me know if you have any questions, tips for me, or are interested in more videos – I love hearing from you all!

My Summer Post Recap: All things Baby, Back to Work, Engagement, Re-branding & Travels!

It’s been a summer for the books! So much growing, traveling, fun & so many firsts in our life! As I was rounding these up, I went back to re-read some of my posts – I need to take some of my OWN advice and remember why I wrote the things that I did.
The post that hit me the hardest was “The 5th Trimester: Learning to Balance Time & Give yourself a Break.” This post is very near and dear to my heart – definitely the most honest words I’ve written to date. If you are a working mom, or will be…check it out!
The most exciting thing that happened personally this summer, is that Craig and I got engaged! We are so official now!
The most exciting thing that happened blog wise, is that I re-branded from “Kayla Marie” to “Running with Strollers.” I finally found my niche and can’t wait to keep writing & bring great content to all my readers!
Here is a recap of this summer’s posts. I have re-linked for easy reading if you may have missed one in the craziness that summer can bring 🙂

Soft & Comfy Shirt Dresses {Perfect for the Transition to Fall} + A Gap Discount Code!

Hi Friends!! I am finally writing since launching my new site, name, logos, Facebook page, and updated instagram handle. What do you guys think? I hope you feel as if “running with strollers” is a great metaphor for my life, and the topics I write about here on the blog. I spent a lot of time with the guys at WRK Personal Branding to get this first launch rolled out. I say first launch because this is *fingers crossed* just the start of what is to come. They were so professional, hilarious, and it was true collaboration throughout the entire process!
What’s new with you guys? My entire news feed is everyone’s kids going back to school…so freakin’ cute! Although it was like two seconds ago that summer was ending and WE were going back to school. I think this means fall is coming, so we better start the fall fashion convo NOW!
img_3367
I wasn’t initially going to do a full post on this dress but I got so many questions and compliments when I posted on IG here, I decided we must talk about shirt dresses – not to be confused with shirts that you wear as a dress! I bought this dress from OLD NAVY back in the spring after having Calvin because it’s loose, comfortable and able to be worn in spring, summer & fall. Also, I must add – this dress is currently on sale for $19.99! I have a medium but it runs very big so size down, if you’re questioning it.
Shirt dresses are perfect for transitioning into fall. This fabric is a bit heavier and the sleeves and length are perfect for when it’s not too hot but not too cold either. I am so so excited for fall fashion…summer fashion is just not my fave anymore. I feel like up until I was about 20, summer was my favorite season. Basically, summer is fun when you can spend it at the pool relaxing as opposed to sitting in an office staring at a computer screen. Now, it’s just too hot for me, too hot for Cal, and this girl doesn’t like to sweat when she’s not supposed to be sweating (aka outside of a workout!) #firstworldprobs
It’s funny, when I was pregnant I would wear tight, form fitting dresses all the time because it was really cool and acceptable to show off my belly then. A big belly = cute. Now, not so much. I actually have to admit that I’m not a huge dress fan or wearer in general because i just feel more comfortable with a waist band (helps suck it all in, haha.) Is that weird? I know most people are the opposite.
Sometimes when wearing loose or over sized dresses, it can tend to look like I’m either 1.) wearing a sack or 2.) am huge because I have a larger chest. One solution for this is tying something around your waist…can be a shirt, a belt, or even a fanny pack if you’re feeling adventurous. I chose a jean shirt here, which I could also actually wear as intended, if needed. A lot of shirt dresses come with a belt or cinched waist (see options below), so look for those if you feel you have the same issue!
You could also choose other statement pieces that draw away from the mid-section such as statement shoes (I chose wedges since it is still so warm out, but this dress will also look great with short booties for fall) a hat such as this floppy, or a a piece of jewelry. I wrote about floppy hats last year and can’t wait to bust them out – and probably write about them again this year! Such a fun and stylish accessory.
Although I got this dress from Old Navy, their sister company, GAP, has some great options right now for achieving this look – here is a style guide with some of my favorite easy shirt dresses that will easily transition you into fall:

All dresses + a 40% offer can be found here:

Get 40% off with code STYLE at Gap. Restrictions apply. Ends 8/18.

I brought Calvin along while taking these photos and he was seriously an angel watching in his stroller.
img_3077It’ll be September in just two short weeks – I hope you all are as excited about transitioning into fall as I am. What are your go-to’s? I will write about my favorite transition boots (let’s be honest – boots are the best fall wardrobe staple) before the end of the month.
Have a great rest of the week!

Our Engagement Story + My Fave Vacation Photos

Hi Friends! It has been a CRAZY week back from vacation and so much has happened since I posted previously about the 4th of July. I got those pictures taken of our family for both the blog and just to have some quality images of the 3 of us – little did I know that this holiday would take on such a larger meaning for our family. We got engaged on July 4th, 2016, in Corolla, North Carolina. We were on a family reunion type trip with 18 of my family members staying in one large beach house, so they were all there watching!
I know it may sound dumb or that you’re thinking, “yeah right”, when I say I was shocked. We do have a child together and already function as a true family, but I had NO IDEA it was happening at this time, let alone this year. We had talked so much about re-focusing our priorities to Calvin, our careers, figuring out where we’d be long term, and eventually buying a house, that I thought engagement was the LAST thing on our roster for this year. Also, Craig can hardly ever surprise me, so I thought I’d know for sure before it happened, and that I’d have to fake being surprised so he didn’t know I knew …lol! Well he got me good.
I has previously told Craig when we do get engaged, I better have my nails, hair & makeup done for picture purposes. #princessstatus So, the day before (July 3rd) it was pouring all day and my sisters tried to take me to get my nails done. I didn’t have time to go before we left & what else do you do on a beach vacation when it’s raining? When we got to the place they couldn’t take us because of availability and I said “oh well, I don’t even care about my nails.” There was no more convincing me that we should try elsewhere. Fail #1.
On the 4th, before dinner, we took showers and Craig was trying so hard to get me to dry my hair and “get ready” but I wasn’t having it because we were staying in for dinner to grill out. God knows I won’t get ready if I don’t have to…especially on vacation. 😂 So I threw my wet hair into a clip and bolted up to dinner. Fail #2.
These two things show right away that I had absolutely NO IDEA I was about to get engaged, as I was always sure I needed to look my very best during one of the biggest moments of my life.
Earlier in the day, Craig had told me that he wanted to give a toast before dinner just to thank my family for having him and say how cool it is that we all got together. I said, “ARE YOU SURE?” I thought he maybe just had too many beers at the pool…however, others had said prayers or toasts before previous meals, so I suppose it wouldn’t be that weird.
Craig telling me ahead of time he was doing this was so so smart – when everyone had gotten their food and he stood up, I was expecting the “toast.” When he started talking, I took a hugeeeee bite of my cheeseburger because I did not think I was about to get engaged. #hangrymama
As he began to get more serious and look a bit nervous, my chewing slowed immediately and my hands covered my face to hide my tears. I don’t even cry that often. I couldn’t believe it was happening. After every thing we’ve been through in the 3 years we’ve been together – a move across country, 3 apartments, stressful days at new jobs, A BABY – it was just so bittersweet and I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room. He did so good. He’d been planning so long for this moment.

It’s funny, you set all of these ground rules or requirements in your mind for when you get engaged and how you want it to happen. Then, when the moment came, I wasn’t thinking about anything except the fact that it’s finally official – I’m going to marry the most selfless, caring, sweet man and Dad that I know!  No fancy location, fancy outfit, perfectly polished nails, or expensive dinner could have topped this moment. I feel so lucky every day and I can’t wait to finally share a last name with my two guys.

Here are a few other of my fave photos from our trip:

img_3261img_326220160703_20545520160703_144938img_3211img_3271img_3269img_3270img_3263

We didn’t take as many pictures on vacation as I would have liked because Craig’s phone got wet and we usually use his camera. Honestly, I was also trying to just enjoy each moment on our trip & not think as much about perfectly capturing every second. We also haven’t bothered lately with using another camera because well, that’s one extra thing to worry about. I do, however, want and NEED to invest in a DLSR. Does anyone have any recommendations for one that is easy to use and won’t break the bank? Please shoot me a message – would love your opinions!
Now, onto planning a wedding (scary!) We have a really busy summer with my work trips, my best friend’s bachelorette & wedding, etc, so we will probably focus more on planning come fall. For now, we are not in a HUGE rush, but I’m sure I will be capturing a lot of the planning journey here on the blog once it begins.
Huge thanks to everyone for your continued support and sweet notes on our engagement. Love you all!

❤ Kayla

Red, White & Baby [Patriotic Style Inspo for the Whole Fam]

Happy Friday!! This particular Friday is super exciting because we are officially on vacation now for a full week. Seriously, so pumped. I almost gave myself a panic attack today stressing so hard about work. The stress is real – SO this is coming at the perfect time!
We are going to Corolla, NC (the OBX.) Who has been? What should we make sure to do? Are there really wild horses on the beach? Let me know, friends!
I decided we were in serious need of some fam pics so we met up with my photographer and she got some amazing 4th of July themed pics taken for us. Craig is always taking pics of me and Calvin or vice versa, so it’s very rare we are all in the same shot. I will love these photos forever!

patriotic 4

After we shot these photos I realized almost everything we were wearing was from Old Navy (except my top) and suddenly, in my mind, we were this family:

Seriously, I think everyone has owned one of these Old Navy horrible patriotic shirts in the past. BTW – I hope no one in this family sees my blog – and if they do, well, we’ve allll been in a photo like this, LOL. Did you know that they still sell new versions of this shirt each year? No offense if you have one for 2k16, I just can’t believe this is still a thing. Guess they are taking ‘don’t fix what ain’t broken’ to a whole new level. There is simply no statement more true than this:

Nope. You aren’t.
We decided to take a bit more of a “modern” approach on 4th of July fashion.

Springtime Floral & Fringe

I’m so excited to finally get another fashion post up on the blog this year & I want to talk about what’s in my closet for Spring! My style is not typically super feminine or ‘flowery’, but this year in particular, I can’t stop gravitating towards everything FLORAL! It just feels so fresh and there is no question when wearing, that it is in season. I mean, Spring = Flowers.
This look, featuring FRINGE will be the first of 3 looks with a floral theme on the blog this season. Spring is also festival season, which always seems to bring a plethora of fringe to wardrobe staples. Floral mixed with fringe is even better in my book. I’m not even embarrassed to say that I found this beautiful plum kimono in a junior’s section – we gotta do what we gotta do. I had in my mind exactly what I was trying to find, and I hit the jackpot at Macy’s, right as I was leaving the store. And really, is it that much different than shopping at Forever? There are no rules saying Moms can’t shop wherever want, too! There are, however, rules on how stealthy and efficient one must be while leaving the house with a 6 week old at home. 😅
I paired with a basic blank tank underneath and black jeggings (best invention since leggings themself.) You know, I haven’t committed to real pants post-baby, just yet. I added some more fringe with this black boot & jewelry is all black & gold – which is my usual go-to. All pieces linked below photos.
I’ve included some shots of my look, along with my top picks for a similar feel.

Animal Print : a neutral, must-have

So I’m sitting here this morning, hanging with this bebe bump of mine and waiting for Craig to get up — I look down and my obsession for animal print is affirmed. As if I didn’t already know. I’m wrapped in the furiest (is this a word?) animal print blanket, on my iPad that’s in a cheetah case, drinking coffee out of my favorite cheetah mug. 😳  Do I have a problem?

Other animal print items I own and use/wear on the reg: gloves, scarves, fuzzy socks, cosmetic cases, pjs, slippers, backpacks. I guess I should say I have an obsession of {mostly} animal print accessories. I don’t walk around in head to toe animal print, but love adding to solids with it. I also just realized I have received a ton of AP accessories as gifts. For Christmas, my sister will get like a blue blanket, my other sister will get green, and I’ll get leopard. #thanksmom&dad!

Reasons why you should try this trend and invest in a few key pieces:

1. Animal print accessories are generally both black & brown, which means you can wear with black or brown boots, a black or brown purse, and I believe it’s really what prompted me to believe black and brown CAN and SHOULD be worn simultaneously. High school me would be cringing at that statement… I was soo matchy matchy. Now, I’m a creature of convenience and am all about items you can mix & match with anything.

2. It’s a neutral! I truly believe this …it looks good with colors as well. Just last week I paired leopard gloves with a wine red coat #ftw. You can take any solid shirt, sweatshirt or pants, add an AP accessory and suddenly you look cool. My favorite places to buy solid go-to items are Gap, Old Navy, Forever21 and HM. I have been wearing SO much black during this pregnancy.

3. Don’t be boring. If you find yourself always wearing the same colors (black) or kinds of pieces (solids), mix it up! AP is a great way to do this.

Here are some items I abs. love right now and definitely need to purchase :

Leopard Faux Fur Coat

*I once bought a fur coat from Forever 21 off the clearance rack. It’s not until I went to wear it, that I discovered it had EARS on the hood. I checked and this coat, however, does not have ears. AP tip = stay away from anything with ears or a tail added. It’s not a good look if you are over the age of 7*

2-pack hipster brief

Nike Free 5.0 V4 😍

Kensie Pillows

Marc Jacobs Leopard Scarf

Leopard Print Poncho

Hobo Leather Tote

Quay Sunglasses

Tell me what you think! What is your go-to print? What is your favorite *fun* accessory?

Baby Update : We are about to hit 39 weeks and Baby C is resting comfortably (even if I’m not.) Work craziness has been a blessing in disguise as I have little time to sit and think about how I’m feeling, how many more days we have left, and how even my maternity clothes are feeling tight. My birthday is in 4 days, and our due date is in 10 –hopefully he comes sometime in between the two 🙂
